In Orange County many people just think of the OC like it is a part Los Angeles. Being an Orange County native, I have never really heard of any specfic artists that grew up in Orange County and made it big. It was not until several years ago, I was curious about this topic and I found out that the artists I love actually only grew up a few miles from me. I made a top five list of artists or bands that made it big who came from the Orange County area:
- Gwen Stefani was born in Fullerton, CA and her hometown is described to be Anaheim. Stefani was known for the band, No Doubt, which her brother and her created. She went to Fullerton College and California State University Fullerton, she dropped out of school for touring for their third album the “Tragic Kingdom Tour.” No Doubt won two Grammy’s for “Hey Baby” and “Underneath it All,” on their “Rock Steady” album. Stefani went solo and released the album “Love. Angel. Music. Baby.” because she wanted to explore more of her inner pop artist. Her single “Hollaback Girl” was her first US #1 single. Stefani released her second album called “Sweet Escape”, and it did not do as well as her first album. Stefani returned to No Doubt and released another album with them which reached to number 3 on the Billboard 200. Gwen has been on several seasons on the Voice and is now dating Blake Shelton. Gwen Stefani is a considerable success hit, and she is always changing the tide in music.
2) Marcus Mumford is the lead singer for the band Mumford and Sons. Mumford was born in Yorba Linda, CA. At six months old, his parents moved back to New England, where they are from in Wimbledon Chase. He started the band in 2007 and has been placed in the Forbes 30 under 30 magazine, being side by side with Rihanna and Adele. Marcus is known for putting many instruments into a song to make it perfect. He and his band are very hard working, by letting their music speak to their audiences.
3) Steve Aoki is an American electro house musician, producer, and music executive. Aoki born in Miami, Florida but all of his childhood he grew up in Newport Beach, CA. He went to UCSB where he graduated with two bachelors degrees one in feminist studies and the other in sociology. By the age 20, he made his record label called Dim Mak. He has reached the number 1 chart on the Billboard charts for his Neon Future l album. Aoki has performed at substantial EDM festivals like Ultra and is a known international artist.
4) Young the Giant is an American rock band that was created in Irvine, CA in 2004. They debuted their first album in 2010 and their first three singles including “Cough Syrup” were charted on the US Alternative Songs chart. They have released a total of four albums. I have seen them in concert, and they are incredible live. They are known for their soft rock and alternative sounds; they recently released their fourth album called “Mirror Master” which has a different tone from their past albums.
5) The Growlers is an American band that formed in Dana Point, CA in 2009. Their music is composed of surf, pop, and rock. They have released seven albums and several EPs. They have organized the annual Beach Goth Festival that features several artists across the genres in music. The Growlers have toured with the Black Keys, and have performed at Coachella. They are an upcoming band, that has inspired many groups into the Beach Goth genre.
